Reflections - Official Rules

read the following documents before making student art submissions

Eligibility

ALL Charlotte Wood Middle School students are eligible to enter.  PTA membership is NOT required.

Competition Organization

  • Each Charlotte Wood submission will be evaluated by a panel of impartial judges selected by the CW PTA Reflections Committee
  • A winner will be selected in each Art Category and Special Artist Division based on the National PTA Reflections criteria including the required Artist Statement
  • Judging Criteria: Interpretation of theme, Technique & Creativity
  • The Charlotte Wood winning submissions move on to be evaluated at the school district level.  Winners are selected in each art category for each grade level division.  The process is repeated at the PTA district level (greater East Bay), state and national levels.

Virtual vs. Physical Submissions

  • For now, all submissions are virtual:
    • Photographs of 2-D and 3-D art pieces
    • Digital photography
    • Digital recordings of dance choreography and music
  • File specifications are listed in the rules below
  • If a winning submission moves on in the competition, it may eventually be required to submit the physical art project

File name format:

  • Student Last Name - Art Category (ex: Dance, Music, etc.)
  • The file names will be changed to a coded name to maintain submission anonymity

Special Art Division Rules - Students who identify as having a disability and may receive services under IDEA or ADA: Section 504 may enter in the Special Artist Division or grade division most closely aligned to their functional abilities.

Official rules by Art Category including file types, sizes, art dimensions, production lengths, etc.

Entry Requirements — (All participants must also follow Arts Category and Division Rules) — Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the theme may be submitted. Each entry must be the original work of one student only. An adult may not alter the creative integrity of a student’s work. Because the program is designed to encourage and recognize each student’s individual creativity, help from an adult or collaboration with other students is not allowed except in the Special Artist Division. Only one student may be recognized as the award recipient for each entry. Other individuals may appear in or perform a student’s work, but the work itself must be the creative product of one student only. See the specific Arts Category Rules for details. Each entry must contain a title and all entries must include an artist statement. The artist statement communicates what inspired the work, how it relates to the theme, and the content of the work. The statement must include a minimum of 10 words, but may not exceed 100 words.  Use of copyrighted material is prohibited, except for recorded music in dance choreography and film production entries. Plagiarized entries will be disqualified. Use of PowerPoint presentations are prohibited because most graphic elements are copyrighted.
